Update: Nintendo Responds to Hack Claims

Update: Nintendo has released the following statement regarding the Wii U hack claims made yesterday.
“Nintendo is aware that a hacking group claims to have compromised Wii U security. However, we have no reports of illegal Wii U games nor unauthorized applications playable on the system while in Wii U mode. Nintendo continuously monitors all threats to its products’ security and will use technology and will take the necessary legal steps to prevent the facilitation of piracy.”
Original Story: A hacking group has claimed to have cracked the Wii U’s copy protection thus allowing them to play pirated software.
According to the team who can now play games from a USB stick, the group has “completely reversed the Wii U drive authentication, disk encryption, file system, and everything else needed for this next generation key.”
The method used has been coined as an “optical drive emulator” which allows the systems region locks to be overridden, all Wii U models to recognise the emulator and have it use an “embedded Linux system.”
It remains to be see whether Nintendo has a way to circumvent this hack at this current time.
