Yesterday we reported Best Buy having changed the release date of the PlayStation 3 exclusive title, The Last of Us. Originally scheduled for May 7, the new release date read ‘June 18’. Retailers are known for changing their release dates, many are placeholders and only give an estimated time of release. However it was extremely strange for The Last of Us to be altered, since the release date had been confirmed on all accounts.

Sony has now confirmed that the release of The Last of Us, has indeed been delayed. The game is now scheduled to be released on June 14, Naughty Dog have released a statement on the games delay.

As a team we pride ourselves on setting a very high quality bar for every aspect of our games – gameplay, story, art, design, technology and more. We want to make sure The Last of Us raises that bar even further – for ourselves, and most importantly, our fans. As we entered the final phase of development for The Last of Us, we came to realize just how massive Joel and Ellie’s journey is. But instead of cutting corners or compromising our vision, we came to the tough decision that the game deserved a few extra weeks to ensure every detail of The Last of Us was up to Naughty Dog’s internal high standards.

The Last of Us was originally thought to be released in 2012, though no official release date was ever announced. At last years VGA’s (Video Games Awards) it was announced the game would hit stores May 7.

As stated in our earlier report, this is the first time Naughty Dog have delayed a game after officially announcing its release. Naughty Dog recently gave their first hands-on previews of The Last of Us, including releasing gameplay footage of the Infected and a ton of brand new screenshots.
