Sony Computer Entertainment America’s senior vice president John Longworth, believes retail copies of video games will be around for awhile longer.

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Longworth was asked how Sony plans to balance the needs of consumers and the needs of retailers with PlayStation 4 games all available online.

“It’s clear that the vast majority of the people want to go down to GameStop or Best Buy, they don’t want to buy it online right now.” said Longworth.

“I think the reality is this: Our digital business is growing fast, and we have incredibly strong partnerships with our key retail partners as well,” Longworth continued. “What we try to do is offer a relatively level playing field and let the gamers decide. We’re not trying to advantage them, we believe in consumer choice.”

Even though PlayStation 3 and Vita have both incorporated the release of retail games day-in-date digitally, Longworth suspects the retail disc will be around longer than people expect.

“People might be quite surprised, I think physical games will be around a lot longer than some people think.”

Sony does not release sales figures of digitally purchased titles, apart from the breakdown list of best sellers. Does this mean these digital versions are not producing strong numbers? We can only speculate, but it seems a digital only future is a long way from reality.
