Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan has spoken to Gamereator regarding the PlayStation 4. In the interview Ryan clarifies some of the details regarding many of PlayStation 4’s features and their upcoming presence at Gamescom.
Microsoft recently confirmed changes to their Xbox One system, regarding the consoles daily reliance on an internet connection to allow the system to continue to play games. PlayStation 4 doesn’t require any online checking requirements, Ryan has also confirmed all the Cloud based gaming advantages will also be found in the PlayStation 4.
“If a consumer does not want to connect you don’t have too, if for whatever reason the consumer wants to go and buy discs and put them in his PS4 he can do that” Ryan continued. “Equally we recommend consumers connect because the PlayStation 4 experience is clearly enhanced by going online, we recommend people do this. But the difference is we don’t insist it.”
When asked about the PlayStation 4 indie games coming at launch, Ryan further confirmed Sony’s push to make the experience of bringing their titles to PlayStation 4 as easy as possible.
“We feel it’s a very important part of the PlayStation 4 ecosystem, to bring in these new, fresh, exciting development talent, you know small teams doing stuff quickly, quite cheap, but bringing some really cool, fun stuff then we want it on the platform. And we are going to make it as easy as we can for these people to come to PlayStation.”
At Sony’s E3 conference the focus was “showing some updates” on titles already revealed for the PlayStation 4, with the only AAA reveal coming by way of The Order: 1886. Will more game be announced for the PlayStation 4?
“There’s a lot more coming” said Ryan, “There are 30 first party studio games in development, 20 are going to ship within the first year of the consoles life and of those 12 are new IPs. There’s a lot going on, we just have to keep stuff back. We have Gamescom coming up, and we have to have something to show at Gamescom, don’t we?”
Even though Sony are clearly focused on next generation, they are not forgetting the PlayStation 3 and Vita audiences. Gran Turismo 6 will be releasing on PlayStation 3 later this year and Vita will have continued support with a range of different titles
“The decision to publish [Grand Turismo 6] on PlayStation 3 really talks to the install base of 70 million PS3’s” Ryan continued speaking regarding the Vita’s software future. “It’s a kind of blended strategy between the larger games and a bunch of smaller stuff”.
Maybe most interestingly Ryan also spoke about the PlayStation 4’s ability to stream games, giving us further clarification when these features will be available on the console.
“We’re launching in American in 2014, we are working to bring the feature to other parts of the world including Europe.” However due to European territories having different legislation’s, the feature will take longer to come to Europeans.
“There are a lot of details to work through and we are in the process of doing that, but we do not yet have a timeline outside of North America. We will start streaming PS3 games to both PS3 & PS4, and that will be quickly followed by Vita as a client device.”
PlayStation 4 titles will also be available to stream through these features, yet these titles won’t be available until further down the line.
When asked if he believes PlayStation 4 has the ability to re-invigorate the gaming industry, bringing it back to the popularity it had 3-4 years ago, Ryan boldly answered with one simple word.
“Yes”
Do you agree with Jim Ryan? PlayStation 4 will be released holiday season 2013, and will definitely be released before years end.
