Creative Director of NetherRealm Studios and Co-Creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise, Ed Boon, has posted an interesting image on his personal Twitter. Which strongly suggests the announcement of the rumoured follow-up to Mortal Kombat 9, is a foregone conclusion.
The image in question (posted below) shows the rear end of a car, which clearly features the prominent letters “MKX”. Alongside the image in question Boon also stated, “Hmmm… I wonder what the X stands for ?”

Though the image posted could merely be trolling his Twitter followers, it does suggest the possible existence of two different titles.
Firstly, the X could represent Mortal Kombat Ten (X); which would allign with the previous title in the series being Mortal Kombat 9. However, it could perhaps suggest that the next Mortal Kombat title could be crossed with another property, and with the strong indications that a sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us is on the way, could they perhaps be one in the same?
If the latter turns out to be true, this wouldn’t be the first time DC and Mortal Kombat have been featured together. In 2008, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was released, which removed the insane amount of gore that is usually featured in Mortal Kombat.
It’s best to take this image with a grain of salt at the moment, but with Kiefer Sutherland recently confirming he recorded voice-work for an upcoming Mortal Kombat title; the announcement of Mortal Kombat’s return seems imminent.
