Possible microtransactions in Grand Theft Auto Online may have been spotted, located within a file on Rockstar Games’ website.
A user on Reddit has found when opening the store section in the pause menu, the game requests a file on Rockstar’s servers. The plain XML file brings up lists for downloadable content that was included in the special pre-order editions of Grand Theft Auto V, alongside an array of “cash cards”.
These “cash cards” range in price, from $100,000 to $1,250,000. Alongside images of these cards, a description of the “cash cards” is also revealed.
“Cash is king in this town. Solve your money problems and help get what you want across Los Santos and Blaine County with the purchase of cash packs for Grand Theft Auto Online. All purchased cash is automatically deposited into your character’s bank account. Spend wisely, cash therapy is fleeting.”
Grand Theft Auto Online is a persistent online world, producing some similarities to MMO’s. The idea of giving players the option to purchase in-game currency with real money has been around the gaming industry for some time. Though, Rockstar has never incorporated this feature before.
Rockstar has not released any statements on the rumour at this time.
Grand Theft Auto Online begins October 1 and our full Grand Theft Auto V review will be posted very soon.
