North Korea Use Call of Duty Footage Showcasing US ‘Attacked’

Earlier today North Korea released a YouTube video seemingly depicting New York City engulfed by flames after an attack. However, this footage was taken from the popular first person shooter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
The video itself was uploaded by the North Korean website, Uriminzokkiri. For those of you who are unaware of their existence, they distribute news and propaganda such as what we have seen today.
Activision, the publishers of Modern Warfare 3, issued a breach of copyright claim with YouTube once they found out their games footage was used. The video itself has now been taken down, though many subsequent videos have appeared from users who acquired the footage online.
The video itself is shot in a dream-like sequence, while Michael Jackson’s We Are the World plays in the background. The video depicts a young man envisioning himself upon a North Korean space shuttle that has been sent into orbit. It seems the shuttle itself is launched using the same rockets that were in Pyongyang back in December. Though Pyongyang claimed that these tests were related to a space program, the international community believe it to be an undercover missile program.
The shuttle within the video circles the globe, showing images of various countries and a now reunified Korea. We are then shown a city engulfed by flames, in ruins from what appears to be a missile attack. This footage was from an in-game cut-scene used in Modern Warfare 3. Within the game this scene shows a New York City in ruins, after an attack by Russia.
The video itself included some harrowing caption, which read as follows:
“Somewhere in the United States, black clouds of smoke are billowing,” “It seems that the nest of wickedness is ablaze.” “Despite all kinds of attempts by imperialists to isolate and crush us … never will anyone be able to stop the people marching toward a final victory,”
The propaganda video ends with the young man stating, that this dream will “surely come true.”
Call of Duty is one of the gaming industry’s biggest titles. No doubt Activision and Infinity Ward (creators of Modern Warfare 3) are upset over their game being used in such a distasteful manner.
The video stems from the UN sanctioning North Korea against their rocket launch in December. North Korea has stated they want to conduct nuclear testing, despite these sanctions.
