Director and Quantic Dream founder David Cage has revealed Microsoft originally turned down the 2010 PlayStation 3 exclusive Heavy Rain from appearing on their consoles. This was due to the child kidnapping that becomes an integral part of games story.
The information was revealed during yesterday’s 2013 BAFTA Annual Games Lecture in London, as originally reported by the folks over at Polygon.
“They [Microsoft] really loved Fahrenheit,” said David Cage, “and they really wanted to do something with us.”
Though Microsoft had shown enthusiasm behind the French studios projects, Cage claims they “got scared” when they learned about the narrative’s subject matter. Which revolved the kidnapping of a young child, which was a strong theme throughout the experience.
“They didn’t want the scandal,” Cage said.
“Microsoft is a great company, I’m not complaining or criticising,” Cage pointed out, making sure to emphasise that the two companies simply had different visions for Heavy Rain and what they wanted the title to be.
Quantic Dream has been known for its strong relationship with the PlayStation brand, releasing Heavy Rain exclusively on the PlayStation 3. The alignment for Heavy Rain to release on the system was simple, both companies “could understand each other and this is how Heavy Rain happened.”
Quantic Dream’s next release Beyond: Two Souls will also release exclusively on the PlayStation 3, on October 8 in North America, October 9 in ANZ and October 11 in Europe.
