A few days ago ‘the new Xbox’ was referenced by a Microsoft employee for the first time, it was in an interview with The Verge regarding the new Outlook.com. Brian Hall the general manager of Windows Live referred was the employee in question, who possibly slipped up big time.
Apparent leaked development kit
“The new Xbox” is one of many projects that could be integrated with Windows 8. We’ve had Hotmail and operated Hotmail for about 16 years. We obviously have Exchange, and Outlook, that people use at work,” He explained to The Verge “We just decided it was time to do something new and bring the best from each of those and put them together and release it right in time for the new wave of products that we could have coming out with Windows 8, with the new version of Office, with the new Windows Phone and the new Xbox.”
When Microsoft was contacted regarding the probable slip of the tongue, they quickly responded. Providing IGN with these comments regarding the statement that was made.“The comments to The Verge were not understood in their intended context. When Brian mentioned a ‘new wave of products,’ he was referring to the full lineup of products coming later this year from Microsoft, including Windows 8, Office, Windows Phone and of course our fall Xbox update which will bring a host of new consumer experiences like Xbox Music, Videos, Games on Windows 8 and Xbox SmartGlass.”
Now could this be 100% truth and he was referring to a new Xbox 360 update in the future? Or was this a complete slip of the tongue? This is the first time anyone within Microsoft has made any statement even hinting towards a ‘new Xbox’, even though rumours continue to fly with recent leaked photos of an ‘apparent’ development kit, the console being codenamed Durango and Microsoft first party studios such as 343 Industries and Rare hiring for next generation consoles.
Could this be sooner then we think?
With still no confirmation that a next generation Xbox is under lock and key somewhere deep in the fortress that is Microsoft headquarters, this is still all speculation, but enough to warrant some very strong assumptions that it exists. With recent patent filings also leaking and many developers stating 2013 is the year for next generation consoles, it is looking likely to be fact rather than coincidence.
We will update you when we hear more and continue to speculate over what ‘Durango’ might mean for the next generation consoles, for gamers and for Microsoft as a whole.
Excited for next generation? Do you believe this was a BIG slip-up? Let me know in the comments below.
