Xbox One is trying to combine gaming and TV into one console, but this combination may go even further with a patent revealing  the possibility of TV based Achievements.

The patent was filed in November last year, detailing Microsoft’s focus to make watching TV an interactive medium.

“Television viewing tends to be a passive experience for a viewer, without many opportunities for the viewer to engage or have interactive experiences with the presented content,” the application reads. “To increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content, awards and achievements may be tied to those items of video content.”

The patent reveals details regarding these achievements, stating these could range from a GamerScore system viewed by others, new avatar accessories, virtual money or even physical rewards.

Details are also provided revealing the idea of handing out single event achievements, these could be given for watching the Super Bowl, or even an entire TV series.

“Additionally, by tying the awards and achievements to particular items of video or advertising content, viewers may be encouraged to increase their viewership of the content, thus increasing advertising opportunities,” according to the application.

Microsoft revealed the Achievement system on Xbox One is able to be altered, with developers able to add more Achievements after the game has been released.

Microsoft’s vision also incorporates Kinect, with achievements rewarded for specific actions while watching a TV show. It also states the possibly of the viewer holding up specific items, which the Kinect would scan and delegate achievements accordingly.

With the Xbox One finally revealed, the ability to edit Achievements on-the-fly and the system requiring 24/7 connection to the Kinect sensor, the ideas related to this patent seem very likely. Though companies register hundreds of patents annually, that will never see the light of day, the pieces of the puzzle certainly do align.
