New CEO of Square Enix, Yoskue Matsuda, has revealed that their major title releases may have actually been profitable.
After criticizing the sales of Tomb Raider, Hitman: Absolution and Sleeping Dogs, it seems these titles did generate profit. Though this profit didn’t reach the goals set by Square Enix, this is a strong sign for the future of these franchises.
“[E]ven though development expenses were covered, these titles did not sufficiently contribute to profit.” revealed in their financial results by Matsuda. ““These titles were lauded from a creative perspective, achieved very high levels of quality, and I believe that we achieved our primary goal of reinvigorating existing IPs and creating new IPs,”
Matsuda also claims the western market for packaged goods has been challenging, after Square Enix posted a major loss that results in the previous CEO to resign.
